Description

Soil Moisture Sensor with Fork Probe and Comparator Module

The soil moisture sensor set resistively measures the water content in soil and provides you with both an analog and a digital signal for further processing.

The fork-shaped probe measures the soil's electrical resistance via two exposed traces: the moister the soil, the lower the resistance. The separate comparator module with LM393 IC evaluates the signal, making it well suited for maker and learning projects with Arduino, ESP boards, or Raspberry Pi.

Measuring principle – Resistive measurement via the fork probe; the moister the soil, the lower the resistance
Two outputs – Digital switching output DO (HIGH for dry soil, LOW once the threshold is exceeded) and analog output AO for finer readings
Adjustable switching threshold – Via the blue trim potentiometer on the module
Two status LEDs – One for power supply, one for the digital output state
Separate design – Probe and module connected via a 2-wire cable, so only the probe sits in the soil

The fork probe's electrodes corrode through electrolysis during continuous operation and can become unusable after a few months. Therefore, only power the probe while taking a measurement.

Without hysteresis in the comparator, the digital output can switch quickly between HIGH and LOW at moisture levels near the switching threshold.
